Glen Hanlon is no stranger to the NHL having served as a goaltender for three franchises over 14 seasons. After hanging up his blades, Hanlon joined the coaching staff of the Vancouver Canucks where he spent eight seasons with the club. In 1999, Hanlon moved to the Portland Pirates, the AHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals, a team he then joined in 2002. In 2003 Hanlon was named Head Coach of the Capitals, a position which he holds today.
Career Highlights:
- As a player, Hanlon played in 477 games for the St. Louis Blues, New York Rangers, and Detroit Red Wings appearing in 35 playoff games.
- As a coach with the Canucks, Hanlon helped the team to the first 40-win season in franchise history (1991-92 season), and an advance into the Stanley Cup Finals (1994).
- In 1998, Hanlon gained international recognition as he was named assistant coach to the Canadian National Team at the World Hockey Championship.
- During his stay with the Portland Pirates, Hanlon led the team to two playoff appearances, and was recognized as the AHL's Coach of the Year. When he left in 2002, he was the second winningest coach in franchise history.
- When Hanlon moved to the Washington Capitals, he was behind the bench for the Capitals 1000th win in franchise history.
- In 2005, Hanlon was assigned to coach the Belarus hockey team, leading the team to 10th place at the Men's World Ice Hockey Championship in 2005 and to 6th place in 2006.
- In 2006, following his historic victory for the Belarus Ice Hockey Team, Hanlon was recognized in a Belarusian magazine as "Sports Man of the Year".
